The Centre for Human Proteomics (CHP)
was established in May 2003 at the Royal College of
Surgeons in Ireland with grants from Science Foundation Ireland and
the Higher Education Authority's Programme for Research in Third-Level
Institutions, and support from RCSI. The focus of the CHP is the application
of proteomics technologies to identify proteins, their
modifications and their role in disease. Proteomics
is the identification, quantification and characterisation
of all the proteins in a particular cell, organ or organism.
It also embodies the body of technology applied for
the high-throughput identification of proteins including
their structure, localisation and function. Discoveries
and outputs from the CHP will contribute to furthering
our understanding of disease and in developing diagnostic
and therapeutic products.
The CHP has close links with the Conway
Institute Proteomics Research Centre at University College Dublin,
and the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at Dublin City University.
We are fully committed
to the education and training of academic and industrial
scientists and engineers in all aspects of proteomics
technology both from Ireland and abroad. Through our outreach
programmes we aim to advance the understanding, relevance
and impact of science in Ireland.
